Effects of Feed Withdrawal Time on the Incidence of Fecal Spillage and Contamination of Broiler Carcasses at Processing
نویسندگان
چکیده
Carcass contamination during processing is an expensive problem for poultry processors. Feed withdrawal (FW) is commonly used to reduce the amount of gut contents prior to slaughter, thereby reducing the probability of contamination. The present study used market aged mixedsex broilers to evaluate the effect of FW time on the incidence of fecal spillage and contamination of broiler carcasses at processing. In order to develop a more simple research protocol for FW, the effects of live haul and holding in stationary crates were compared. Broilers were subjected to 1 of 4 FW times (4, 8, 12, and 16 h) prior to slaughter at a commercial processing plant, in which the incidence of carcass contamination was recorded. Carcass yield and clearance of contents from 8 gut sections were determined. Moisture content of the pooled gut contents was assessed. Shrink increased from 2.1 to 3.3% of pre-FW BW after 4 and 16 h, respectively. Gut weights decreased significantly with every additional 4 h of FW. The incidence of processing plant inefficiencies decreased with increasing FW time. Gut moisture was not correlated with FW time, although moisture of the gut contents was reduced in birds subjected to live haul. Twelve hours of FW resulted in an optimal combination of gut clearance and carcass yield.

The Effect of Colistin Sulfate in Feed on the Controlling of Salmonella enteritidis Contamination in a Broiler Farm
The effect of colistin sulfate on reducing Salmonella enteritidis (S.enteritidis) infection in broilers and contamination from broiler carcasses was evaluated. 40000 birds in two separate houses were considered. Colistin sulfate was added in to the feed of the test group as 100g containing 1,200,000IU/ton of feed for the whole period (56 days). To isolate S.enteritidis, samples were taken from ...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of water pressure and concentration of dichloromethane after the evisceration system under the fecal decontamination of chicken carcasse surfaces with and without apparent contamination. From a total of 322 carcasses, 50% were intentionally added chicken droppings in an area of more than 2 cm2 and the rest of carcasses were kept with...
متن کاملEffect of external or internal fecal contamination on numbers of bacteria on prechilled broiler carcasses.
During processing, fecal material may contact broiler carcasses externally or internally. A study was conducted to determine the effect of external vs. internal fecal contamination on numbers of bacteria on broiler carcasses. In each of 3 trials, 12 carcasses just prior to evisceration were obtained from a commercial processing plant, placed on a shackle line, and eviscerated with commercial eq...
متن کاملInfluence of Feed Withdrawal for Three Hour Time Period on Growth Performance and Carcass Parameters Later Stage of Male Broiler Chickens
Feed restriction strategies are proven to be effective in increasing the growth performance and carcass parameters of broiler chickens. The objective of the present experiment was to evaluate the effects of feedremoval for three hour time periodon growth performance and carcass parameters of relatively older male broiler chickens. Twenty days old male broiler chickens (n=80) were allocated into...

A study was conducted to determine effects of bird age at slaughter, feed withdrawal, and transportation on levels of coliforms, Campylobacter, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella on carcasses before and after immersion chilling. Broilers were processed at 42, 49, and 56 d of age after a 12-h feed withdrawal period or a 0-h feed withdrawal period (full fed). At each age, broilers were processed fr...
